Capt. Claude Bartley Snead III, U.S. Army (Ret.)

Capt. Claude Bartley “Bart" Snead III, U.S. Army (Ret.), 79, entered into rest surrounded by family at home on Friday, August 4, 2023. Survivors include his wife of 52 years Antoinette “Toni" Snead; six children: Claude Bartley “Bart Jr” Snead IV, Tonya (George) Fry, Jenny Snead (Brian) Williams, Autumn (Mike) Wright, Dustin "DJ" Snead, and Robyn (Matthew) Hooker; six grandchildren: Cason, Jacob, Jackson, Dylan, Ella, and Ivy; and brother William Arthur (Violet) Snead. Other family members include a niece Alex Hadden, and two nephews: Brian and Joshua Snead.

Bart was preceded in death by his mother Doris Snead; father Claude Bartley “C.B.” (Jessie) Snead Jr; sister Sue (Donald) Hadden; and brother Charles (Donna) Snead.

Bart was born in Atlanta and grew up in Clarkston, Georgia. A US Army Captain, he served two tours in Vietnam and received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. After medical retirement from the Army due to injuries, Bart graduated from Augusta College and obtained his Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Iowa. He worked as an Admissions Counselor and Registrar at Augusta College (AU) before moving into Civil Service at Fort Gordon in Child Development Services; he retired in 1995.

Bart’s interests included his six grandchildren and NASCAR. He fought extended chronic illnesses in the last ten years and in addition to traditional medicine, relied on honey buns and chocolate milk to enhance his quality of life. He passed away peacefully at home, as he wished. The family extends their deepest gratitude for the compassionate care provided by personnel at the VA Hospital, Trinity Home Health, and Pruitt Hospice.

The family will receive visitors from 4 to 6PM Sunday, August 6 at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors on Davis Road. A celebration of life service will be conducted by Chaplain Robert Thompson on Monday, August 7 at 11AM in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors. Military honors will be rendered, with Patriot Guard Riders as honorary pallbearers.
