Augusta, GA - Mr. Adiel Levin (Al) Adams, Jr. found God’s gift of peace on Thursday, October 7, 2021 after an admirable eight year battle with pulmonary fibrosis. Mr. Adams was born in Hawkinsville, Georgia to the late Adiel Levin Adams and Lucile Little Adams. He graduated valedictorian from Hawkinsville High School and Georgia Institute of Technology, class of 1962, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He attended Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. and was commissioned Ensign. For three years, Mr. Adams served aboard the destroyer USS Rich, rising from ASW Officer to Weapons Officer. Following active duty, he served an additional three years in the Naval Reserves and was honorably discharged as Lieutenant in 1969.
Mr. Adams arrived in Augusta, Georgia in 1966, working for Claussen Lawrence Construction Co. The assignment was to work on the construction of the Jacksonville International Airport. It was during this time he met and married Dorothy Jeanne Coulter.
By 1968, Mr. Adams was ready for a new venture. He founded A. L. Adams Construction Co. Throughout his career, Mr. Adams was responsible for the construction of numerous commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings in Georgia and South Carolina, most notably the restoration of the Aiken County Courthouse and parts of University Hospital MCG. In 1990, he sold A. L. Adams Construction Co. to M.B. Kahn Construction Co. At the time of his death, Mr. Adams was operating several businesses in Augusta and Aiken.
For eighteen years, Mr. Adams served on the Board of Directors of the Sun Trust Bank (formerly First National Bank). Additionally, he served the vestry of Saint Paul’s Church, the Board of Trustees of Augusta Preparatory School, and was past President of the Augusta Country Club. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club of Augusta, past president of the Augusta Heritage Club, member of the Beech Island Agriculture Club, the Augusta Assembly, Augusta Country Club, and Mountain Top Golf & Lake Club in Cashiers, NC.
Mr. Adams was an avid gardener and completed the Georgia Master Gardener’s Program. A student of the game of golf, he recently and with reluctance gave up the game he adored due to his illness. He was consistently shooting the 70’s. There are few people who can claim to have read as extensively as he, nor many with his breadth of knowledge. His children and grandchildren were especially fascinated by his ability to recall facts from subject matters ranging from country music and antique furniture on to Winston Churchill, World War II, and scientific names of trees and plants. Mr. Adams’s mind was rarely at rest. He was interested in the world and interesting to the world who knew him. He will be missed.
Mr. Adams is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy Coulter Adams; sons, Forester Bailey Adams and his wife Perrin; Franklin Field Adams and his wife Kate; six grandchildren, Forester Bailey Adams, Jr., Joseph Clarke (Jack) Adams, Jane Sutton Adams, Mariann Kathryn Adams, Cornelia Jeanne (Birdie) Adams, and Frances Field Adams; his beloved sister, Cile Adams Mathews and her husband, Mr. Edgar Mathews.
