Alan B. Williams
Augusta, GA – Alan (Al) Betz Williams loving husband to Barbara Seitz Williams passed away on October 7th. He was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania in 1920, but has been a resident of Augusta since 1943.
He graduated from Alfred University (New York State College of Ceramics) in 1942 with a B.S. in Ceramic Engineering as a Ceramic Engineer. Upon graduation from Alfred he worked at Diamond Alkali Co. in Painesville, Ohio then moving to Augusta in 1943 to work with Babcock and Wilcox Co. which is now Thermal Ceramics. Upon taking early retirement from Babcock and Wilcox, he then worked as the Director for Facilities Planning for Medical College of Georgia until retirement.
He and his wife Barbara were charter members of Covenant Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday school and served as an Elder in the church. He has been a member of the downtown Kiwanis Club since 1978 and he was a member of the Augusta Country Club from 1944-2014.
After retirement from the Medical College of Georgia, he continued a very active life at Brandon Wilde to include working on their Resident Council and spearheading the individual mini gardens. Al was always a big believer in continuing his education and learning new things. He imparted this on all of his children and grandchildren and was very interested in their lives.
Al was predeceased by his father and mother Mr. and Mrs. William Lamar Williams Jr. of Winter Park Florida, and two brothers William Lamar Williams III. of Houston , Texas and Stuart Williams of Sante Fe, New Mexico.
He is survived by his spouse of 61 years Barbara Seitz Williams, three children, numerous grandchildren, a great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Children are Gretchen Williams Middleton (Bob), Albany, Georgia, Frederick Gantt Williams (Donna), Spartanburg, South Carolina and Briton Seitz Williams (Jenny Lynn) North Augusta, South Carolina.
Grandchildren are Jackson Middleton III (Lindsey), Jessica Middleton, Gantt Williams, Alan Williams, Walker Williams, Margaret Ann Williams, Hampton Williams and Banks Williams.
Great Grandchild is Robert Jackson Middleton IV.
His nieces are Evan Shearer (Greg), Sara Williams and nephews are John Williams, Todd Williams and Buzz Williams.
A memorial Service will be at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Augusta, Georgia on Monday , October 10th at 11:30 A.M. with visitation following. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church for Christian Education, 3131 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30909.
