Augusta, GA. - Albert von Kamp Gary Jr, 68, devoted husband of Nancy V. Gary, passed away on Monday, March 21 from an extended illness.
With love and support from his family and close friends Al battled cancer for three years. He is preceded in death by his parents Mary Hill Gary and Albert von Kamp Gary, Sr. A native of Augusta, Al attended Mt. St. Joseph Academy and St. Mary on-the Hill School. He was a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church.
He was a member of the first graduating class at St. Mary’s in 1961. A graduate of Aquinas High School, he continued his studies at Clemson University, graduating with a degree in Industrial Management. Al’s hobbies were gardening, fishing, Civil War history, and cheering for his beloved Clemson Tiger Football Team. He cherished his fishing trips to Edisto and special times fishing with his grandchildren, friends and family at Yemassee. He was very proud of his southern heritage. Al’s ancestor, Brigadier General Martin Witherspoon Gary, CSA, served with the Army of Northern Virginia. He treasured his visits to Edgefield SC to view the general’s plantation home and memorabilia.
Al started his early career in banking and was a senior Vice-president of C&S bank. In 1983 he became President of Lynn's Food Stores, a chain of convenience stores known as Ye Olde Grocery. Al retired in 2012 as Vice-President from Barrett Supply.
He and his wife of almost forty-seven years, Nancy, had two children: Natalie Marie Gary Desso (Casey) of Columbia, S.C. and Albert von Kamp Gary III (Lauren) of Summerville, SC; grandchildren: Emily Desso, Forester Desso, Anne Myers Reeder Gary, Albert von Kamp Gary IV; sisters: Laura Gary VanGeffen (Jack), Irene von Kamp Gary, Mary Hill Gary (Bill Huie), brother: T. Reed Gary (Jan).
He was a member of many organizations including the Augusta Country Club, Holy Mackerel Fishing Club and Society of Colonial Wars.
A Graveside service will be Thursday, March 24, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. at Westover Memorial Park with Fr. Mark Van Alstine officiating. Pallbearers will be Gregory C. Poteet, Thomas M Blanchard, III, William T. Gary IV, William Gary Salters, Frank Salters Gary and Tom O’Brien. Honorary Pallbearers are Thomas M Blanchard II, William Sinton Cobb, John R. Owen, John M. Marks, James Wall, A. Brantley Barrett Jr., F. Madison Barrett II and William E. Huie.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made at American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, 269 Calhoun Street, Charleston, SC 29401.
