Aleksandra Demediuk
Augusta, GA – Aleksandra Demediuk, 88, died June 27th in her sleep at her home in Martinez, Georgia. The only child of Drs. Katerina Dormidontova and Feodor Leschuk, she was born on January 17, 1926 in Kiev, Ukraine. Despite growing up under Stalin’s oppressive regime in the Soviet Union, Aleksandra excelled in music and graduated first in her gymnasium class. After her father was arrested during Stalin’s purges and sent to a Siberian labor camp, Aleksandra and her mother fled west during WWII.
In Karlesruhe, Germany Aleksandra met her husband Dmytro and received a master’s degree in music from the Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe in 1949. Immigrating to the US in 1950, Aleksandra and Dmytro settled in Highland Park, New Jersey and resided there until moving to Martinez in 2001. While raising two daughters, Aleksandra taught piano.
She is survived by her husband Dmytro, daughters Oksana and Nina Demediuk with their respective spouses, Ranjit Dhaliwal of Martinez, GA and Richard Caro of San Francisco, granddaughters Samantha and Catherine Dhaliwal, Marguerite Caro, and countless piano students both in New Jersey and Georgia that she enriched with her love for classical music.
A funeral service will be Thursday, July 3, 2014 in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 80 Livingston Avenue, New Brunswick at 10:00 A.M with Father Iurii Kostyk celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in Bound Brook, NJ.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening, July 2nd from 7:00 until 9:00 P.M. at Jaqui-Kuhn Funeral home in Highland Park, NJ.
