Allen Slavens
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Friday, March 25, 2022, Mr. Allen Eugene Slavens, 81, loving husband of 57 years to Candace W. Slavens.
Allen was hired as comptroller for Richmond County in 1974, serving in that position for 12 years. Under his stewardship, the county became one of the few in the state to end deficit spending, the practice of borrowing money to fund the budget. In 1986 he became the comptroller for the Medical College of Georgia, retiring from there after 13 years of service. He was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church for over 55 years, serving in many different positions, including finance chairman and treasurer. He was a member of the church choir the Betterly Sunday School class.
Family members, in addition to his wife, include sons Gregory Slavens and Bradley Slavens, daughter Jennifer Hobbs and son-in-law Aaron Hobbs, step granddaughters Sidney and Stephanie Hobbs, brother Harold Slavens (Sharyn) of Phoenix, AZ, sisters Helen Engle of Phoenix, AZ, Wanda Ruth (Jerry) of Rainbow City, AL, and Marietta Slavens of Tucson, AZ, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Vernice Slavens, and sister and brother-in-law, Wendy and Dave Shurr.
The funeral service will be Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. at Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 2220 Walton Way, with Rev. Sonny Mason officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 P.M., at the church.
