Augusta, GA – Passed after a brief illness on Wednesday, May 25, 2016, Mrs. Allene Cordell Thornton, 97, wife of the late Mr. John Maxwell Thornton.

Mrs. Thornton was a native of Elberton, GA but lived in Augusta most of her life.
She was an active member of Sacred Heart Church, and she served as head of Sacred Heart School PTA for multiple years. After 20 years as a homemaker, she resumed her professional life, and retired from St. Joseph's/Trinity Hospital, Medical Records in 1989.

Mrs. Thornton painted porcelain for over forty years and had a studio and kiln in her home. She travelled and studied her craft across the Eastern United States and became a registered member of the International Porcelain Painters Guild.

Mrs. Thornton was preceded in death by her brother, Guy Cordell (d.1928). Family members include her daughter: Sally Thornton Russell and cherished son-in-law Joel D. Russell of Richmond, Virginia; her son: Tim Thornton and her beloved daughter-in-law Sara Barrineau of Aiken, South Carolina; and one granddaughter, Miss Alexis Murrell of Edgefield, South Carolina.

Frankie May, M.Th, M.S., Director of Pastoral Care at Trinity Hospital, along with Jerry Schneider, will officiate together at a Celebration of Life, to be held in the Trinity Hospital Chapel, on Saturday, June 18, at 2 p.m. The family will share refreshments directly following the service, at a location to be determined.
