Augusta, GA – Anna Bannister entered into rest Saturday, June 1, 2024.
A native Augustan, Anna graduated from Tubman High School, attended two years at Augusta College, and graduated from Northwestern University. She worked in local radio stations and eventually taught English and Speech at the Academy of Richmond County.
Anna was an active member of First Baptist Church from her teens. She was one of the first two women elected the diaconate there. She was the author of both the history of First Baptist Church and that of Curtis Baptist Church. An avid Bible learner and teacher, she taught Sunday School for over 60 years and taught many private group Bible studies as well. In addition, she was involved with Adult Literacy and English as a Second Language ministries. At the age of 90, she was still periodically teaching three different Bible groups at Brandon Wilde.
Anna was a woman of conviction and of compassion. She had a ready laugh and a welcoming personality. She was deeply committed to her family and to maintaining a home filled with hospitality and love.
She is preceded in death by her husband T.C. Bannister, her brother Robert Lee Olive, Jr., her sister, Constance Olive Harding, and her stepdaughter Carolyn Lewis. Survivors include her daughter Joanne Jones Cheng (Larry), stepson Ron Bannister, stepdaughter Shirley Avery (Bruce, deceased), two granddaughters, four step grandsons, and two step granddaughters.
The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 1:00 P.M. in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. Rodger Murchison officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. The family encourages attendees to wear purple in Anna’s memory.
