Annie Laurie Blount Hamilton passed away at home on May 17, 2022 at age 86. Annie was born on October 21, 1934 in Orangeburg, SC. She graduated from Winthrop College with a degree in Home Economics. In 1957, she moved to Augusta where she worked as a dietitian at the VA Hospital, Gracewood State School and Hospital, and the Medical College of GA. As a dietitian, Annie worked with medical teams caring for children and adults with highly specialized needs such as cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and inborn errors of metabolism. While at Gracewood, she participated in ground-breaking research on the effect of diet in people with phenylketonuria. Annie’s diligence, thoroughness, and genuine care made a world of difference in the lives of her patients and their families.
Throughout her life, Annie gave back to her community as a volunteer at Forest Hills School, the Sierra Club, the Augusta History Museum, and Friends of the Library.
She enjoyed many hobbies - reading, sewing, quilting, needlework, crocheting, gardening, and board games. Annie was a playful mother and grandmother, delighting in her four grandchildren.
Annie is survived by her two children, Sarah Lee Hamilton (David Boyd Zuckermann) and William Blount Hamilton (Bryn Gardner Hamilton) and her four grandchildren, Lila Anne Zuckermann, Rosalie Grace Zuckermann, William Blount Hamilton, Jr., and Wesley Catherine Hamilton. She is also survived by her brother Edward Blount, sister-in-law Mary Hamilton, many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her former husband John Hamilton.
Since Annie loved the news and entertainment on public radio so much, memorial contributions may be made to Georgia Public Radio.
