Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Saturday, September 6, 2014, Arthur F. Maier, 94, loving husband of 67 years to the late Etholene B. Maier. Arthur was born in Chicago, Illinois, November 10, 1919, to Francis S. and Elsa (Becker) Maier who were recent German immigrants through Ellis Island.

Mr. Maier served in the United States Army Air Corps in WWII, where he was a medic in the China-Burma-India Theater. After being honorably discharged from active duty, he continued to serve in the National Guard. After WWII, Mr. Maier began a career in medical administration with the Veterans Administration. With more than 30 years of service, he retired as Chief Medical Administrator at the Augusta VA Hospitals.

Mr. Maier was a faithful member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, having served as congregation president, elder, Sunday school teacher, confirmation class instructor and choir member.

He was active in the Uptown Kiwanis Club, having served as President and District Lieutenant Governor. He always enjoyed ringing the Salvation Army bell and singing carols at Christmas and answering phones on the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon. He also served as a poll worker for Richmond County. Art was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan, but he also loved the Atlanta Braves. Known by his grandchildren as “Pop”, he will be missed by family and friends for his wit and kindness.

Mr. Maier is survived by daughters: Patricia M. Wallace (Gary), Karen M. Dye (Paul), grandchildren: Skip W. Wallace, Paul H. Dye IV (Beth), and Nicholas M. Dye (Lael), and great grandchildren: Thomas Arthur Dye, Lucy Kathryn Dye, David Maples Dye, and Emily Claire Dye.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to the caregivers at Elmcroft Assisted Living, Westwood Nursing Home and to the University Hospital staff on seven west for their loving care and support.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at 11:00 A.M. at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church with Rev. Roger A. Schwartz officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Gary Wallace, Paul Dye, Skip Wallace, Paul Dye IV, Nicholas Dye, Jerry Gemma, Anthony Hauff and Norman Diebold.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lutheran Redeemer Church Memorial Fund, 402 Aumond Road, Augusta, GA 30909.
