Barbara Downes
Augusta, GA- Barbara (Babs) Anne Downes passed into rest on Tuesday, July 10, 2018. She is survived by her loving husband of over 57 years, Michael M. Downes and a son Michael Jr. (Kimberly and their two children Cade and Reagan), a daughter, Samantha Poehlman (Lee and their children Gavin and Logan) and a sister Dr. Faye Delmore.
Babs earned a BFA with a major in voice from the University of Georgia in 1956. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and the Glee Club. Although trained in opera, her first love was musical comedy. She performed with the Frank Ford Music Fair in summer stock productions of Fanny and South Pacific. She was selected for the original cast of the new Broadway show The Music Man. She left professional show business when the show closed to marry her college sweetheart and begin her new career as an Army Wife. For the next 30 years she sang, danced, acted and directed in little theaters and dinner theaters overseas and in the US, wherever her husband was stationed. She became an integral part of every community whether it was a church choir soloist or a musical comedy leading lady. Her shows are too numerous to list but her favorite ones were The Merry Widow and Hello Dolly. As the Merry Widow she was dazzlingly beautiful with the voice of an angel. In Dolly she was the vivacious and revered Dolly Levi with a voice bigger than the theater itself.
After her performing days she remained active in the tennis community, took water aerobics and even line dancing. She made friends wherever she went and enjoyed her luncheons and get-togethers with all her cronies. She was interested in everyone from store clerks to restaurant waitresses. She will be sorely missed by all.
In lieu of flowers, donations should be sent to St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, 1420 Monte Sano Avenue, Augusta, GA 30904.
