Barbara Wise

Barbara Wise, 84, entered into eternal rest January 30, 2023. Barbara Wise was born in Aiken, SC on January 24, 1939, she was the firstborn daughter to Marion Bates Sr. and Lillie Mae Bates.

Barbara was a 1957 graduate of Hempstead High School, Hempstead, NY. She worked as a telephone operator, teacher’s aide, and studied to become an X-Ray Technician. She worked for Grumman Aerospace Corporation for over 20 years where she retired.

Barbara was married to William Wise for 63 years. To their union they had two daughter’s Sherri and Wendy, who were simply her joy. Barbara’s life centered around her family, she loved raising her daughters and talking and laughing with her sisters and brothers. She enjoyed cooking, antiquing, home décor, shopping, and music. She influenced her daughters to become active in church where she was a devout member of Union Baptist Church for over 55 years. She was member of Hansel and Gretel and a Brownie Troop Leader to serve her community. Barbara loved being busy whether it was cleaning, organizing, going to a concert, a Broadway play, she lived an amazing life. In her later years, she joined Gospel Water Branch Baptist Church where she went to bible study. She was a self-taught in jewelry beading and gardening, as she delved into her entrepreneur skills and passions. She loved to learn and truly was a student of life. Barbara used good common sense to navigate her life and family to achieve success. She was a source of wealth and knowledge with a strong work ethic. If you needed guidance or help, Barbara was always there to lend support and comfort.

Survivors include her husband, William B. Wise; two daughters, Sherri Johnson and Wendy Wise Whitfield (Derrick Whitfield) her devoted son-in-law; one brother, Marion Bates Jr., two sisters F. Carol Bradley and Judith Kronin, grandchildren, Royce Johnson, Delano Whitfield, and Dior Whitfield; and a host of nieces, Renee Hughes (Greg), Robin Gibson, Shayna Jones (Ben), nephews, Shawn Sampson (Ivonnet), Scott Brown (Angela), Leonard Jr. (April), Louren Bates (Crystal), Chris Bates, Blair Bradley (Stephanie), Ashley Wilcox, Brianna Curley (Albert)Brother-In-Law Sylvester Wise, Sisters-In Law Valerie Wise and Cynthia Wise Wilcox and a hosts of cousins, relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, February 4, 2023, at 1:00 P.M. at Gospel Water Branch Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
