Basil Robert Huntress
Retired Civil Service
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Doctors Hospital, Mr. Basil Robert Huntress, 86, husband of Mrs. Debbie Peabody Huntress.
Mr. Huntress was born in Fort Fairfield, Maine, and graduated from Fort Fairfield High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United Stated Army Air Corp and served as a 2nd Lieutenant in World War II. He was co-pilot of a B-24 Liberator and sole survivor of a crash near Melbourne, Florida that ended his military career. Mr. Huntress became a Systems Analyst for the Civil Service at Valley Forge Army Hospital in Phoenixville, PA. He retired from the Civil Service at Fort Detrick, Maryland. After retirement he relocated to Augusta to play golf.
Family members include, in addition to his wife: daughters: Joyce H. Herbst, Jacquelyn H. Cloud, Patti Peabody; son: Prentice Peabody; brother: C. Peter Huntress; grandchildren: Trey Cloud, Andy Cloud, Karen Lee; eleven great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter. Mr. Huntress was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, the late Elizabeth Huntress.
A Memorial service will be held on Friday, May 21, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church with the Reverend Canon Neal Phelps officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to the charity of ones choice.
