Augusta, GA – Belinda Newman Whitfield, 72, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Belinda was born in Thomasville, GA but grew up in Augusta. She graduated from Butler High School in 1969. She met her future husband Dan in 1968 and they were married June 20, 1970.
Nine months later they moved to southern California, the first of a number of moves with Dan’s Career with Kimberly-Clark. Belinda was always a trooper, creating a new home life and focused on raising their two sons. More recently that love was spent helping care for her two grandkids before they reached school age.
Belinda is survived by her husband of 53 years, N. Dan Whitfield and her sons Scott Allan Whitfield (Deborah Anne) and Stephen Carl Whitfield. She is also survived by her two grandchildren Sarah-Scott Whitfield and Hampton Cole Whitfield, who brought her great joy and affectionately referred to her as BeBe. She is also survived by her two sisters, Dolores Moore (Richard) and Kristina Ward (Steve). And finally, Charlie, her Jack Russell terrier who liked nothing better than to be in her lap. She was preceded in death by her parents, James A. Newman Jr. and Alice Smith Newman.
Belinda was a great cook and always had the knack of knowing what a recipe needed to make the finished product even better. She took up tennis and became an accomplished and coveted doubles and mixed doubles partner. In retirement, she and Dan loved to travel, taking a number of memorable trips before her health problems limited her mobility. Her most beloved trip was the annual spring trip to Edisto Beach SC with her family.
