Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Saturday, November 5, 2011 in Winter Haven, FL, Mr. Benjamin Daniel Harris, 85, husband to Marie M. Harris.

Ben was born in Cloquet, Minnesota. He was the son of Joseph Benjamin Harris and Marianna Crocket Harper Harris. Ben attended New Freedom High School in New Freedom, PA. He was committed to serving our country as a Navy Seabee during World War II. After the war he attended Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA for a short time. Ben then re-enlisted in the Army serving in the Constabulary in Germany and on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur in New York City. In addition he served in Sendai, Japan, as a recruiter in Portsmouth, OH and Ashland, KY, and in the Signal Corps at Fort Gordon. When he retired in 1967 he was the NCO IC of the Directorate of Instruction for the Signal School at Fort Gordon. Ben went on to a long career in the construction industry as the owner of Ben Harris Builders, Rondette Homes of Augusta and the B&J Builders. He distinguished himself in the community with his service to the Lions Club, Metro Augusta Association of Homebuilders, Homebuilders Association of Georgia where he was the Vice President, Metro Augusta Chamber of Commerce and as a Housing Consultant to the Governor of Georgia and the President of the United States. Ben was an avid fan of the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs. He had a flagpole erected at his home in Winter Haven to display his team flags, along with the stars and stripes of the country he served and loved.

Ben was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Annabelle Simmons Harris, daughter: Jeanne Harris Wollis, along with his four brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Marie, sons: Joseph Benjamin Harris II (Marianne) of Augusta, John William Harris (Joan), Jeffrey Daniel Harris (Melanie), and daughter: Janice Elaine Harris of Orlando, FL. In addition, he leaves behind five grandchildren: Julie Walton (Frank) of Augusta, Katy Harris Hohman (Jed) of Walnut Grove, GA, Joseph Benjamin Harris III of Jacksonville, FL, Kathryn Danielle Harris and Benjamin Harris of Augusta, two great-grandchildren, son-in-law, Jeff Willis of Aiken, SC, four step-children, several nieces and nephews that include Jack Harris of Havre de Grace, MD and Elaine Walz of Dumfries, VA.


Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Charlie DeLoach officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Westover Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to The American Lung Association.
