Benjamin “Ben” Jones Tompkins passed away with his family by his side on Tuesday, September 5, 2023. The family will receive guests prior to the memorial service in the gathering area, beginning at 10 am on Saturday, September 30th at Trinity on the Hill Church. The service will begin at 11:00 am. in the chapel of Trinity on the Hill. An interment will follow at the family burial plot in Sandersville, Georgia.
Ben was born in Sandersville on December 20, 1935 to Edward Wesley Tompkins and Anna Wicker Tompkins. He was raised in Augusta, Georgia where he attended the Academy of Richmond County before entering the University of Georgia. Upon graduation in 1958, Ben returned to Augusta where he worked for Commercial Credit as a loan officer while serving for seven years in the United States Naval Reserves.
A tireless worker, Ben founded The Tompkins Company in 1967, a window manufacturing company where he continued to work well into his 87th year. He was an early adopter of technology that modernized the window manufacturing industry. Ben loved all facets of the business, which included working in the plant as well growing the business to extend throughout Georgia and the Carolinas. True to his entrepreneurial spirit, Ben started a contracting business in 1982 that was the catalyst for the development of several neighborhoods in the Augusta area.
An avid golfer, Ben enjoyed weekend rounds of golf, dog fight and member-guest tournaments with his golf buddies at West Lake Country Club. When not busy working or playing golf, Ben devoted his time to his beloved wife Jill, who supported him in his successes. She was the quiet calm that kept him going.
Ben is survived by his wife Jill; and his two children, Benjamin Jones Tompkins, Jr. (Steven Satterfield) and Marcus Wren Tompkins (Jenny Tompkins); and two grandchildren, Marcus Wren Tompkins, Jr, and David James Tompkins; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. And lastly, his UGA Dawgs and pet dogs, Lucy and Cordy.
He was preceded in death by his parents Edward Wesley Tompkins and Anna Wicker Tompkins; his sister Adurline Tompkins Chellis, and his brothers Stephen Malone Tompkins and John Edward Tompkins.
