Betty D. Sims

Augusta, GA – Betty Dickey Sims, passed away on Sunday, July 1, 2018 after a valiant battle with dementia, and most recently, pneumonia. Betty was a devoted wife to the late Coroner Leroy E. Sims, a nurturing mother, grandmother, sister and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Born in Newington, Georgia on November 15, 1931 to Hurschell Southwell and Lula Idolia Dickey, it was evident this young girl was made of strong fiber. She took charge of her seven sisters, and worked picking cotton and tobacco in the fields through her early years. Smart and determined, Betty was interested in numbers and politics in particular. In the later 40’s, she came to Savannah, GA, with her first daughter Marion to work for Union Bag Company as an office manager. In 1962, she came to Augusta in marriage to her husband, Leroy. By then, she had a second daughter, April. She followed Leroy’s career in law enforcement, as he worked his way along the ranks. During that time, she worked as office manager for Daitch and Company, and Records Clerk for the Water Works Department. Betty also served 20 years on the Committee for Good Government and was President of the Wives of Police Officers Association of Georgia. Her favorite pastime was sewing costumes and evening gowns for her daughters various events. She was truly devoted to her children. She never failed to attend events they were part of, and was always on the front row. A devoted Christian, mother was also a lifelong member of Lake Park Baptist Church, and enjoyed sharing her love of singing, her favorite hymns with her fellow church goers. As the dementia took its’ toll, her voice was silenced, but she never lost her smile or her spirit.

Family members include her daughters: the late Marion White Linder (Charles) and April R. Cory (Paul); grandchildren: Summer Raehm, Collin C. Bertram, and Carter A. Bertam; sisters: Lena Latham, and Margaret Barrow; brothers-in-law: Orville Blackledge, William Ferebee, and Charles Latham; nieces: Krista Petersen, Kathy Pickel, and Teresa Mizell; nephews: Mark Ferebee, Marvin Ferebee, Kevin Blackledge, Eugene Dickey, and Petrey Jolly. She is preceded in death by her parents: Hurschell and Lula Dickey; sisters: Clara Bragg, Minnie Trevino, Nettie Knight, Ruth Dickey, Mildred Ferebee, Mary Blackledge, Lena Latham, and Margaret Barrow; brothers-in-law: William Ferebee, and Charles Latham; and nephews: Mike Ferebee and James Latham.
