Beverly Dunbar

Augusta, GA - Beverly Bell Dunbar, 92, passed away quietly in her sleep, Sunday, July 1, after a four year fight with multiple myeloma.

Beverly spent over 75 of her 92 years in Augusta, was a graduate of Tubman High School, and an alumnae of the University of Georgia. Born in Atlanta’s old St. Joseph’s Hospital, she experienced a cosmopolitan southern upbringing. Her father, an engineer, worked on rail, bridge and water projects all over the Southern U.S. Her early residences and schools were a virtual travelogue that included Eatonton, Charleston, Jacksonville, Macon, Meta, Atlanta, and always Augusta, again and again.

An enthusiastic and committed member of her community, Beverly was a loving wife, a devoted mother, and a devout Methodist. A gallant soul and a sweet spirit, she was always busy. Over the years, she was active in the PTA, the PTO, the Garden Club, the Cub Scouts, the Brownies, and always the Church. For six decades, she made Trinity-on-the-Hill UMC, her church home. At various times, she was a Sunday school teacher, summer camp counselor, member of the Altar Guild, and even a guide hiking the Appalachian Trail with the church’s youth group. In recent years, she cherished her many friends in the Damren Sunday School class, in the church’s Prime Time Group, and in the CareForce Ministry.

She was married for 60 years to Edward Dunbar, who she met when she was one of the first staff members of the soon to be launched WBBQ. She was the Station’s first traffic manager until her marriage. More recently, a resident of Brandon Wilde, she loved her neighbors enjoying their fellowship and comradery. She played tennis until she was 85 regardless of “the relative youth and inexperience,” of her opponents. And as always she delighted in her bridge games. A member of Pi Beta Phi sorority at Georgia, she remained a loyal alumnae, and was an avid Bulldog fan turning out for football and basketball games from 1942 to 2018! As busy as she was, she was first and foremost a mother and a grandmother, devoted to her four children and her eleven grandchildren. There was humor and grace in everything she did. She will be missed by many.

Beverly is survived by her daughters, Deborah Bell Dunbar of Clermont FL and DeAnn Dunbar Dovale also of Clermont; her daughters-in-law Shannon Hampton Dunbar of Harlem, GA and Patricia Dorethy Dunbar of Alpharetta GA; her sons Bill Dunbar, of Harlem and Ed Dunbar, Jr., of Alpharetta; and her son-in-law Eric Alvin Dovale Jr. of Clermont, her grandchildren Avery Dunbar Yost, Kailey Elizabeth Yost, Aubrey Leigh Yost, Geoffrey Corrin Yost, Kyliegh Taylor Dovale, Matthew Corey Dovale, Sarah Maria Dunbar, William Scott Dunbar, William Harrison Dunbar, Lee Elizabeth Dunbar, and Andrew Ryan Dunbar.

The funeral service will be Thursday, July 5, 2018, 11:00 A.M. in the Chapel of Trinity-on-the-Hill United Methodist Church with Dr. Mike Cash and Rev. Greg Hatfield officiating. The burial will be private. Honorary pallbearers will be the Dameron Sunday School Class.

The family will receive friends following the service in the gathering area of the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial gifts be made to Trinity-on-the-Hill United Methodist Church, 1330 Monte Sano Ave., Augusta, GA 30904.
