William Bernard “Bill” Greer

MARTINEZ, GA- William B. Greer, 98, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on June 14, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. He was born to William Clarence and Maggie Newsome Greer on May 3, 1924 in Augusta, GA., where he spent his entire life. Being raised during the depression, Bill attended Academy of Richmond County while also working in the record keeping department at King Mill.

In 1943 he entered the Army of The United States until 1946. He served as a construction foreman with the 18th Engineer Combat Regiment in the Aleutians Islands. He supervised and directed work in the maintenance of buildings on post areas, supervised the building of aluminum hangers and docks and making of runways. In addition he supervised the requisitions, unloading and distribution of construction material, interpreted blueprints, sketches, and inspected completed work. His decorations and citations included WWII Victory Medal, American Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal with one Bronze Star and a Good Conduct Medal AR-600-68.

After WWII, he worked for Bill Prince as a bookkeeper until the beginning of the Savannah River Site construction where he was employed by E. I. DuPont de Nemours and Company where he retired in 1982 after 35 years, as a Senior Reactor Operator. After retirement, he contracted to inventory secret documents and escort employees who were yet to have security clearance for the Start-Up Department.

Bill was always a pleasure to be around, although while not monopolizing conversations, he continually entertained family and friends with his jokes about any subject at hand. He was described as kind, generous and non-judgmental of others but definitely offered advice on life from personal experiences. He was admired by all whose path he crossed, loved traveling with family and friends, dancing and date nights with his wife, working a good crossword puzzle and looked forward to his newspaper and coffee every morning.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Glenoris Greer Holt, and son William B. Greer, Jr.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years: Harriette Beaver Greer; his son: Robert (Bobby) E. Greer; step-sons: Travis E. Laube and George L. Laube, Jr. (Christie); niece: Glenda Holt Lucas, Bernard Holt (Gail); grandchildren: Tara Uzpurvis (Scott), Maycee Wren, Angelica Laube, Brianna Laube, Bryson Laube and Abigail Laube; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and an additional host of loving nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law: Sandra Barinowski, Zelma Broadwater, Laura Collins; brothers-in-law: Sandy E. Beaver (Linda), Thomas A. Beaver (deceased).

The family would like to express their affection and gratitude to his nurse, Sherrell T. Sizemore, who lovingly provided her care and support to the entire family. Bill looked forward to her daily prayer, reading “today in history” and her singing to him.
