Augusta, GA - Bridget Samms Mowbray, 98, entered into rest Saturday, September 21, 2024.
In, 1926, Bridget was born in Chelmsford, England to the late William and Phyllis Samms. She attended Battersea Polytechnic where she studied Domestic Sciences, and shortly after her studies lived in London where she worked in a hospital kitchen during WWII whose roof had been bombed.
When WWII was coming to a close she relocated to Oslo, Norway where she met and married US Marine, William Mowbray, who had been stationed in Norway for embassy duty. She gave birth to the first of her five children in Norway, then came with her family to the US in 1952.
She retired from Peebles department store to take care of her mother until her passing in 1989.
She moved to Florida to be closer to her younger children. While living in Florida she volunteered at many schools including Glen Allen Elementary, Toledo Blade Elementary, and North Port High School, primarily providing services in the school library or in the school drama department as a costume seamstress and singing in the North Port Chorale.
Biddy, as she was called by many, lived in Augusta for the last 16 years continuing to volunteer for many schools within the Richmond County School System, most notably within the media center at Sego Middle School. She also provided volunteer services at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
She was a long-time member of St. Augustine’s of Canterbury Episcopal Church, where she continued her love of music singing in the church choir until her later years.
Family members include her children: Knut Mowbray (Kathy), Jan Beauchamp (Gregg), Alan Mowbray (Lisa), Mark Mowbray (Lisa), and Ruth-Anne Bradley; 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sheila Robinson, and son-in-law, Wendell Bradley.
A visitation will be held at St. Augustine’s of Canterbury Episcopal Church on October 7th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. The memorial service will be held October 8th at 10:00am also at St. Augustine’s of Canterbury Episcopal Church with Rev. Terri officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Augustine’s of Canterbury Episcopal Church.
