Carl Alan Swanson
Augusta, GA – Carl A. Swanson, 76, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on Sunday, January 21, 2018.
Born in Miami Florida in 1941 to Carl and Elsa Swanson, a loving immigrant couple of Scandinavian descent, who met in New York and settled in Miami, FL in 1931. By 10 years old, Carl had already started exhibiting his enterprising spirit by having a paper route that covered all of Coconut Grove, FL. Carl attended the University of Miami and received an Executive MBA from Duke University. By trade, he was an engineer; however, he was also a creative inventor, entrepreneur, negotiator and mentor. Carl loved people and had many friends who all say he was the most optimistic, engaging person they had ever met. He was always available to give guidance and a helping hand, and generously shared his gifts, successes, talents and knowledge with all. He always sought to not only promote personal and business success in the lives of the people he knew, but to invent better designs and processes to improve everyday life.
Throughout Carl’s career, he worked for Lockheed in Atlanta, E-Z-Go in Augusta, and was one of the founders of Club Car, Inc. in 1978, the business nearest and dearest to his heart. As Senior Vice President of Operations, Carl helped build the foundation that has made Club Car the world’s leading golf car & utility vehicle brand. Not one to rest after retirement, Carl assisted others with their pursuits in the construction, heavy industrial, fine dining, and golf and fishing accessory industries.
Over the years, he was heavily involved with The Augusta Metro and the Columbia County Chambers of Commerce, instrumental in the development of the Horizon South Industrial Park, and a board member of West Lake Country Club.
In addition to his love of people, Carl enjoyed playing golf, working on his many inventions and patents, spending time near or on the ocean, and salt-water sport fishing. Anyone who had been on a deep-sea adventure with Carl has some memorable fish tales!
Carl is survived by his loving wife: Caroline R. Swanson; two beloved sons: David A. Swanson (Kimberly) of Bluffton, SC, and Ron R. Swanson of Augusta; two adored grandchildren: Andrew D. Swanson and Sara G. Swanson, children of David and Kimberly Swanson; and a sister: Ruth S. Grimes of Severna Park, MD.
