Carole H. Camak

Grovetown, GA - Carole finished the course on December 31, 2024 having reached mature age and modeling a life well lived for her Savior to all who knew her.

Born September 13, 1938, as the middle daughter of the Joseph S. Hammond and Eleanor Phillips Hammond, Carole always said her goal in life was to meet a “good looking Christian man and have four to six children.” Immediately after graduating from North Augusta High School in June of 1956, she married James deXavier Camak V “Jimmy.” By the age of 29, she had achieved her goal and was busy raising four children but was fearful and insecure. The next year Carole shared with a friend how she honestly felt and was introduced to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Her fear was quickly replaced by a hunger to not only know Him and His word, but to share His love and certainty with everyone she met. In February 1977, Carole co-founded Higher Ground, Inc. with her husband and for the next 43 years she taught five bible study classes a week in homes around the Augusta area and shared her testimony up and down the Eastern Seaboard at Christian Women’s Clubs, as part of Stonecroft Ministries.

Always open to sharing from her experiences, in 1997 Carole published, “There Came a Lion”, to offer others a hopeful perspective, comforting acceptance through God’s love, and freedom from fear through Christ. While there are many who looked to her as a mentor, it is her children and grandchildren who benefitted the most from her love on a day-to-day basis. For many years she answered the phone by saying “Jesus sets you free” and tried to reflect her Heavenly Father daily. As she began to lose words over the last couple of years, Carole was reminded that all that mattered was knowing her Savior and He knew her.

Carole exemplified a life of change, from fear to finding refuge in her Savior, and from overcoming hardships to finding joy. She endured the loss of their son, Arlen, who she never had the joy of holding here on Earth, the loss of her husband of 52 years to cancer in 2008, and the loss of the home they built together to fire in 2015.

With full hearts we celebrate her life and the rich legacy she leaves to her four children and their spouses: Jamey and Cheryl Camak of Evans, GA, Jody and Roxanne Camak of Evans, GA, Lael and Lynne Camak of Cumming, GA, and Leda and Ian Goodman of Chattanooga, TN; 13 grandchildren: Priscilla (Richard) Nelson, Liorah Camak, Ramona (Chase) Milam, Moriah (Cody) Smith, Audrey (Brennen) Strickland, Arlen (Madison) Camak, Graham Camak, Sophia Camak, Amelia (Sam) Ake, Katherine Camak, Claire Camak, Christopher “Cosi” Goodman, and Xaverie Goodman; and 4 great-grandchildren: A.J. Nelson, Madeleine Nelson, Warren Smith, and Emmett Smith.

We grieve as those who have hope and are thankful for her life and the grace she exemplified.
