Cathy Kottyan
"Our Georgia Peach"

On June 3, 2017, Catherine A. Kottyan, our Georgia Peach, peacefully went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Cathy was born to Perry & Vee Arthur on September 6, 1956 in Atlanta, GA. After spending her childhood traveling around the US, Guam & Panama with her family, they settled in Galion, OH when Cathy was in high school. It didn't take long for her to fall deeply in love with her high school sweetheart, Matt Kottyan. They were joined in Holy Matrimony on May 24th, 1975. While living in Tennessee, Cathy & Matt were blessed with two wonderful children, Tim (1977) and Katie (1984). The family moved to Rock Hill, SC, and lived there for 10 years before returning Cathy back home to Georgia, "the Peach State", in 1996.

Cathy graduated from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN in 1977 with a BS in Education. After teaching for many years in TN and SC, she went back to school to pursue her Masters in Counseling from Augusta University. Cathy then served as an elementary school counselor at Blue Ridge Elementary from 1998-2000 and Brookwood Elementary from 1999 until her retirement in 2016. As both an educator and counselor, Cathy helped shape and influence the lives of so many children.

Cathy is survived by her beloved husband Matt; children Tim Kottyan (Jessica) and Katie Olson (Neil); sister Kaerdi McGovern; and brother Mike Arthur (Linda). She is also survived by several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins and aunts. Everlasting memories will be cherished by her six grandchildren: Clover, Indigo, Willow, Nova, Audrey & Brynn.

Cathy was an active member of her church – Church of the Holy Comforter – serving on the Pastoral Care Committee, Usher Team, Prayer Group & Daughters of the King. She was also involved in her community with the Augusta Newcomers Club and Sacred Heart Association. Cathy was a member of the Georgia School Counselors Association as well as the Georgia Retired Education Association.

Cathy loved the beach, theater, traveling, gardening and UGA football. She was a dear and devoted wife, mother, friend, mentor, and confidante. But the role she cherished most was being a Grandmother, often spoiling her grandchildren with Hungarian donuts and homemade banana bread.

A memorial service for Cathy will be held at the Church of the Holy Comforter, 473 Fury’s Ferry Rd, Martinez, GA on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 4:00 pm, followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Ronald McDonald House of Augusta, American Cancer Society, or Church of the Holy Comforter (Augusta, GA).

The family extends everlasting thanks to all of our loving and supportive friends, Pastor Cindy Taylor of Holy Comforter and to Tina and other caregivers from Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care.
