Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Monday, July 13, 2009 at Heartland Hospice, Mrs. Cecilia “Ceal” Townes Downen, 64, wife of Allan T. Downen.
Mrs. Downen was born on November 7, 1944 in Washington, DC, to Mary Ruth McCarty and Leslie Cecil Townes. She returned to Augusta with her parents soon after. She attended Sacred Heart School, Aquinas High School and graduated from Richmond Academy. After graduation from high school, she worked briefly at the Medical College of Georgia, but soon found employment at Fort Gordon. She eventually was employed by the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate at Fort Gordon where she met her husband, Allan T. Downen. After moving to Washington, DC with her husband and being employed by the Department of Energy, she returned to Augusta and began her career with the Veterans Administration hospitals. She initially worked in the Endocrinology Department, then the Spinal Cord Injury Unit, and ultimately the Education Department, where she assisted VA employees in obtaining additional education in their professional fields. She loved helping and mentoring everyone as they advanced in their careers. She retired from the VA in 2002, but returned immediately to resume her chosen role as a volunteer. Mrs. Downen was dedicated to her family and her work.
Family members in addition to her husband include her daughter: Susan C. Downen of Augusta; mother-in-law: Frances M. Downen; sisters-in-law: Kathy M. E. Downen, Jeanne Townes; nieces: Mary Ezzell, Erin Jones; grandnephew: Dean Ezzell and numerous cousins. and numerous cousins.
The Funeral Mass will be Thursday, July 16, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Rev. Mark Van Alstine celebrant. Pallbearers will be David C. Yarbrough, Charles T. Wright, Lawrence J. Kearns, Robert E. Gore, Jr., Doland W. Gore and Jerry B. White. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
