Albany, GA – Charles Lindbergh “Lindy” Markland, 83, of Albany, GA, formerly of Evans, GA, died on January 21, 2012 at Willson Hospice House, the funeral service will be held on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 12:30 P.M. in the Chapel at Thomas Poteet & Son, with Reverend Perry Shefler officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 11:00 A.M. before the service. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be David Buckley, Ed Newsome, John Villines, Brad Merry, Robbie Parrott and Dave Redmond.
Lindy was born in McClure, VA, to the late Appie and Walter “Red” Markland. The day after graduation from high school, he and his best friend enlisted in the Army. He served honorably during World War II and the Korean War. In 1950, he married Nancy, his wife of 62 years. At the end of the Korean War, he began his lifelong career in the hardwood lumber business for Ritter Lumber Company in
marketing and sales. He then became Assistant Sales Manager for Georgia-Pacific Corporation in Augusta, Georgia. Later he became Sales Manager for Hammermill Hardwoods. Finally, he and his lifelong friend, Bob Moore, formed Highland Hardwood Sales, Inc. where he was co-owner and Vice President and served on the Board of Directors.
Lindy served as director of the Appalachian Harwood Manufacturing Association, the Southern Hardwood Lumber Association, the Appalachian Lumberman’s Club, the West Virginia Forestry Association and the Kentucky Forestry Association. He was a member of Martinez United Methodist Church.
Lindy was an exceptional athlete, lettering in every sport in high school, and he was given the honor of being selected to play on the Army Baseball Team. He also loved basketball and helped to start a business league at the downtown Augusta YMCA. He was also an avid golfer.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Long Markland of Albany, GA; two daughters: Pam Newsome and husband Ed of Albany, GA, Cathy Villines and husband John of Clevland, GA; a sister-in-law/ “daughter” Connie Buckley and husband David of Martinez, GA; a grandson; Markland Aultman and wife Erin of Albany, GA;sister: Jean Mooney of Oak Ridge, TN; 3 step grandchildren, Joshua Villines, Clint Newsome (Jodi), Crista Roeman (Guy); 5 great- grandchildren: Blakely Ann Aultman, John Francis Villines, Ethan Newsome and Brycen Newsome; several nieces and nephews, and his very special caregiver, Jason Kegler.
