Evans, GA – Entered into rest Friday, May 3, 2024, Colonel Gordon Hamilton Fair, 90, was born on February 28, 1934, the son of Noah H. and Ara K. Fair.
He graduated from Mainland High School, Daytona Beach, FL (1952) and with honors from the University of Florida (1956) when he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. During his 28 year career he served as KB50 tanker navigator, Air Traffic Control (ATC) officer, and Air Force ROTC college professor. He had a variety of assignments in the US, Germany, and Vietnam. He was the Chief Controller of a large radar ATC facility in Germany, Commander of a Communications Squadron in Blytheville, Arkansas, Commander of an Air Force ROTC detachment at Samford University in Birmingham, AL, and Resource Management Director as Hqs Air Force ROTC at Maxwell AFB, AL. During his career he also received a Masters of Science degree from the University of Arkansas.
His military medals and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Commendations with one device, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with one device and several military campaign and service awards.
Following his military retirement in 1985, he was a Commander of a Junior Air Force ROTC unit at N.B. Forrest High School in Jacksonville, FL for 10 years.
Colonel Fair is survived by his wife of 71 years, Betty Ann McKie Fair of Augusta, GA; two sons: Gordon Jr. (Liz) of Charlotte, NC and David of Dothan, AL; five grandchildren, Rachel, Reece, Spencer, David Jr., and Alex; three great grandchildren, Jack, Reid and Ava.
Funeral services with full military honors will be held Thursday May 9, 2024, at 2:00 P.M. at Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Porterfield, officiating. Interment will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
The family will receive family and friends one hour before the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wesley United Methodist Church, 825 N. Belair Rd., Evans GA 30809.
