Augusta, GA – On March 26th, 2014, Colonel Marvis Felton Lynes, US Army, (Ret’d), beloved husband and father, stepped out of this life and into eternity, joining his wife of 67 years. He was 88 years old.

He was a native of Waycross, Georgia, he attended public schools at Cascade School, Hoboken, GA; Woodard Godwin School, Waycross, GA; Wacona School, Waycross, GA, earning his high school diploma as an honor graduate. He then worked for the US Army Engineers, US Army Base, Waycross, GA prior to being accepted to the Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Company Apprentice School, Newport News, VA. He met and married Lura Mae Jarrell of Bald Knob, WV in March of 1944. This lead to his enlistment in the US Army in July 1944. Col. Lynes further attended the US Army Ordinance School, the University of Maryland (Deans List), the US Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, GA, and the Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, PA earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Military Science. He began his military career as a Technical Sergeant in July 1944. His career spanned over 34 years and brought him and his family to Kentucky, the European Command, Fort Stewart, GA, Formosa, Taiwan, Pueblo, CO; Army Europe, Fort Gordon, GA; several tours in Vietnam, Chief of Staff at the Pentagon, Korea and Fort Lee, VA ending his career with his retirement from Fort Gordon, GA.

His military career of over 34 years included service during World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam Conflicts. He served in France, Germany, the USA, Korea, and Vietnam. Upon his retirement from the US Army, Fort Gordon, GA on September 30, 1978, he was Director for Industrial Operations, Headquarters Fort Gordon, GA and has lived in Augusta ever since. Included in his awards and decorations are the American Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Army of Occupation Medal (Germany); National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Army Commendation Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters; Parachutists Badge; 4 Overseas Bars; Vietnam Service Medal with 5 campaigns; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm; General Staff Identification Badge; Joint Service Commendation Medal; Vietnam Army Expeditionary Medal; Meritorious Unit Citation; Bronze Star; Vietnam Army Distinguished Service Order, 2nd Class; Vietnam Ordinance Badge; Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Legion of Merit with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster. He is a lifetime member of the Military Officers Association, the Fraternal National beta Club, and supported many organizations throughout the world.

Col. Lynes was a member of Grace Fellowship Church of Augusta. He was actively involved in the building of the new sanctuary several years ago, and his involvement with that building project and the relationships with the men in his church, including his pastor of many years, Wade Trimmer, was one of the greatest highlights of his retirement years.

His beloved wife of 67 years preceded him into an eternity with Jesus in March of 2010. He is survived by his sister Alice Brewer Hansen of Arizona and by their three sons and two daughters: William M. Lynes and wife Merry Beth Seaton Lynes of Chicago, IL, Patricia Ann Yates and husband Jay Yates of Augusta, GA, Beverly J. Lynes of Aiken, SC, Richard D. Lynes of Augusta, GA, and James A. Lynes and wife Lanette T. Lynes of Martinsburg, WV, as well as their 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 31, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Rev. Rev. Brian Fields officiating. Entombment with Military Honors will follow in Bellevue Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great-grandson: Matthew Lynes, David Lynes, Daniel Lynes, Eric Lynes, Michael Lynes, James J. Lynes, Nathan Z. Richards, and Christopher Hall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Fellowship Church of Augusta’ 1725 Sibley Rd., Augusta, GA 30909.
