Col. (Ret.) James P. McMakin

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Tuesday, February 7, 2012,
Col. James P. McMakin, 73, husband of Mrs. Mary Kirby McMakin.
Col. McMakin was a 1957graduate from Union High School. He then joined the National Guard and served two tours in Vietnam. Col. McMakin earned a Masters Degree from Central Michigan State. He attended the Command and General Staff School in Ft. Leavenworth KS and Army War College in Carlisle, PA. Col. McMakin retired to Augusta after several tours and started McAir Aviation as a flight instructor. His passion was flying and teaching others to fly.
Family members in addition to his wife include: son: James D. McMakin of Atlanta; daughter: Deana Gregory of Greenville, SC; two grandsons: James A. McMakin and Holden Gregory; three great grandchildren: Ryan Knowles, Hayden McMakin and Isabella McMakin; brother: Jerry H. McMakin (Ret. US Navy); sister: Schelle Green, PhD. He was predeceased by his brother: Wallace T. McMakin (USMC) and mother: Rosalee Stroud McMakin.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet and Son with Rev. Greg Hatfield officiating. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 37 Villa Road #109 (B-111) Greenville, SC, 29615 or to the Children’s Health Care of Atlanta, Attention: Gift Processing-Cancer Research, 1687 Tullie Circle, Atlanta, GA 30329.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service starting at 1:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
