Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Wednesday, June 27, 2012, COL (Ret.) Robert S. Snead, 76, husband of Mrs. Betty Snead.

COL Snead was born in Louisiana. He received his Bachelors Degree from Centenary College and his Masters Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi.

COL Snead had a highly distinguished career as a US Army Signal Corps officer. He accepted a commission in the United States Army in 1959 and served two tours in Vietnam. Over the course of his 32 year career, he served as chief of the Presidential Support Office, Defense Communications Agency; command at all levels from platoon to brigade; president of the communications-electronics test board at Fort Gordon; and chief of staff for 7th Signal Command at Fort Ritchie , MD. During his active military service, COL Snead consistently set an example of high standards for all to emulate. Upon his retirement, his service to the Signal Regiment continued in a manner deserving of the highest recognition.

After he left active duty, he became the operations manager and the program manager for the General Dynamics resident school at Fort Gordon. COL Snead was also deeply committed to service to Signal Soldiers and their families. He was president of the Greater Augusta-Fort Gordon Chapter of the Association of The United States Army (AUSA), an association committed to “supporting the soldier”. He served two years as the Georgia AUSA president and was selected as the Third Region’s AUSA executive vice-president.

He also served for 12 years as a member of the Metro Augusta Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee and was selected by Georgia’s governor to serve on his military advisory council. COL Snead was a charter member of the Signal Corps Regimental Association and a key supporter of its activities.

Because of COL Snead’s exceptional service and commitment to the Signal Regiment and its soldiers he was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the Signal Regiment in 2001.

Family members in addition to his wife include sons: Derek Snead and wife Terri, Preston Snead and wife Ann Marie; daughter: Tracy Fee and husband David and Julie Kennedy; 8 grandchildren: Megan Snead Goldberg, Austin Snead, Tyler Snead, Marshall Snead, Isabel Fee, David Fee, Frannie Kennedy and Emerson Snead.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 1, 2012 at 4:00 P.M. at Trinity on the Hill united Methodist Church with Dr. Mike Cash and Rev. Greg Hatfield officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
