Augusta, GA –Colonel Scott Johnson, (RET) U.S. Army, entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior on Monday, December 30, 2013.

Colonel Scott Johnson enlisted in the U.S. Army in January 1988. Upon completion of Basic Training and Officer Candidate School, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. He served in a variety of leadership positions with numerous deployments, including two to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. His favorite assignments were as the Commander, 74th Engineer Company (AFB,R), 62d Engineer Battalion at Fort Hood, Texas and as the Commander, 1-3 Brigade Troops Battalion, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 3d Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Other significant assignments were the G3 Plans Chief, 24th Infantry Division and Fort Riley, Fort Riley, Kansas; the Executive Officer of the 70th Engineer Battalion, 3rd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kansas; the 937th Engineer Group (Combat) S-3 Operations Officer, Fort Riley, Kansas; and the Team Chief for the 132d Engineer Detachment (Topo P&C) at Fort Gillem, Georgia. His final assignment was as the Chief of Staff of the United States Army Engineer School at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was promoted to Colonel in June 2010 and was medically retired soon after due to his Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis.

Colonel Johnson earned a BS degree in Geology/Geophysics from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1985, an MS in Administration from Central Michigan University in 2000, and a MMAS from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in 2001. His military schools included the Engineer Basic and Advanced Courses, Airborne School, the Sapper Leader Course, Command and General Staff College, and the School of Advanced Military Sciences.

Colonel Johnson’s military awards and badges include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star (1’OLC), the Meritorious Service Medal (2 ‘OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (1 ‘OLC), the Joint Service Achievement Medal (1’OLC) the Army Achievement Medal (1 ‘OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (2 ‘OLC), the Humanitarian Service Medal (with Star device), the Parachutist Badge, and the Sapper Tab.

Colonel Johnson was a devoted and loving husband and father to his wife, Ann and his young sons, Connor and David. He was passionate about the military and served this great nation for over twenty-two years as a professional Soldier. Scott spent much of his time after retirement working with the ALS community, raising awareness and assisting other individuals and veterans that struggled with this unforgiving disease. He was a member of Abilene Baptist Church and faithfully attended Joseph and Kozue Spencer’s Sunday School Class. He loved the Lord with all his mind, heart, and soul.

Family members include his wife of more than 19 years, Ann Burdeshaw; sons, Connor and David; parents, Segal and Alice Johnson; brothers, Randy (Charlotte) and Keith (Kathy);uncle and aunt: Bill and Beverly Turner; father and mother-in-law, Harlan and Chi Burdeshaw; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Thomas Poteet & Son, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, Georgia with Reverends Brad Whitt and William (Bill) F. Harrell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 10:00 a.m. Interment with military honors will be conducted at a future date in Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
