Mr. Darroll “Dell” Powell

Augusta, GA – Darroll “Dell” Tipton Powell, a faithful and loving husband, entered into rest on Friday, March 1, 2013, surrounded by his loving family. He was also a faithful member of The First Baptist Church and George Balentine Sunday School Class.

Dell is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mildred “Midge” Fortner Powell; daughter: Elise Powell Moradi (Rahim) of Evans; son: John Fleming Powell (Kimberly) of Broadway, Virginia; grandchildren: Ashton Johnthan Moradi of Athens, Georgia, Sally Kate Powell and Erika Lynn Powell of Broadway, Virginia; and sister: Dorothy P. Johnson of Sevierville, Tennessee.

Mr. Powell was preceded in death by his father: Kleber Cenith Powell; mother: Alma Erika Larson Powell; and twin brother: Cenith Powell.

Dell was born in Denver, Colorado. After high school, he enlisted in the US Army during the WWII era and was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He was a graduate of The University of Denver where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in 1952. Following college, he worked for E.I. DuPont and several engineering firms throughout the U.S. and at one time Hamburg, Germany working on special projects. Later in his career, he received further education and training as a Systems Control Engineer, which he utilized working on various plant construction projects throughout the United States. Dell retired from Rust Engineering, which was headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama.

After retirement, Dell volunteered at the Benevolence Program at First Baptist Church Augusta, Georgia. In this role he served as the food procurer and one of those responsible for interviewing prospective clients. He served in these roles for eleven years up until the time his health began to fail.

Dell was a private person and was very well read and versed on most subject matters. He loved God, always put his family first and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He had a great love for football, golf, and sweets.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the kindness and thoughtful care given of Georgia War Veteran’s Nursing Home, especially by the 4th floor. Gratitude is also expressed for the 7th floor of University Hospital, Palliative Care Unit for their professional and empathetic care to Dell and his family.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 7, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Storey Chapel at First Baptist Church with Dr. Gregory DeLoach, Officiating; Dr. Stan Pylant, Soloist; Brad Cunningham, Organist; and Mark Cheek, Piper.

Interment will follow in the Church Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be the George Balentine Sunday School Class.
