AUGUSTA, GA—Davenport Sanford Bruker, 67, husband of Karen Wilson Bruker entered into rest Friday, March 16, 2018. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Cason Bruker, he graduated from the Academy of Richmond County and the University of Georgia where he obtained a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Masters of Art.
He lived in Atlanta for ten years where he worked as an advertising copywriter for Davison’s Department Store and an assistant bond manager for Travelers and Reliance Insurance Companies. He moved to Augusta in 1983 and joined his family insurance agency Sanford, Bruker & Banks, becoming its president in 1985. A one-time board member of the Independent Insurance Agents Association of Augusta, he was a Certified Insurance Counselor and an Accredited Advisor in Insurance. He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Augusta and was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship and a Will Watt Fellowship. He chaired the boards of the Gertrude of Herbert Institute of Art, the Augusta Partnership for Children and the Augusta Opera and served on the boards of the Georgia-Carolina Council of the Boys Scouts of America, the Pinnacle Club, the Clean Augusta Downtown Initiative, and the Downtown Augusta Alliance.
Family members in addition to his wife include daughters the late Alison W. Bruker, Caroline B. Freier (Sönke), and Colleen S. Bruker; brother William C. Bruker, Jr and sister-in-law the late J. Merritt Bruker; brother-in-law’s Larry W. Wilson, Garry D. Wilson (Theresa),sister-in-law Nanette Covington and Brian N. Wilson (Susan); nephews William C. Bruker, III and Matthew B. Wilson; nieces Sarah H. Bruker, Stephanie W. Hearn, Tara C. Pope, and Christy Covington; cousins the late Ronald E. Corbitt (Aurelia), Mary C. Blount, Mary B. Perrin, Mollie B. Fenlon (Whatley), and Camilla C. Hazelton (John).
A celebration of life service will be held Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 12:00 noon at Sacred Heart Cultural Center with Dr. Timothy L. Owings officiating. A reception will follow. There will be a private graveside service. Pallbearers will be Louis “Hap” Harris, Colman “Goose” Goodrich, Paul “Gump” King, Greg “Gregalicious” Kirby, Mel “The Bippie” Locklear, David “Pooh Pooh” Owens, Ed “OMT” Turner, Charles “Bo” Wagner, and Brian “The Newt” Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rotary Club of Augusta.
