Augusta, GA – David Samuel Maney, 87, entered into rest on August 30, 2016.
Mr. Maney was a native of Ames, Iowa. He was an Eagle Scout, President of Ames High School Senior Class (1946), a graduate of Iowa State University where he lettered in Wrestling. He held degrees in Landscape Architecture and City/Regional Planning, and did graduate work in Europe.
He served as the first Executive Director of the Augusta Richmond County Planning Commission in 1961, and as Executive Director of the Coastal Area Planning and Development Commission, Brunswick, GA, during which time, he co-authored "The Future of the Marshlands", a book which became the basis for the "Marsh Law" legislation mandating barrier islands and marshes of Georgia be protected in perpetuity from private and commercial development. He also served as President, Georgia Regional Executive Director Association, before joining the US Department of Commerce as Regional Director of the Economic Develop Administration for southeast United States, and later as Director of the EDA Environmental Office in Washington, DC. He Chaired the Coastal Resource Advisory Council for the Chesapeake Bay area. Mr. Maney retired to Augusta in 1989 and was employed by the State of Georgia. He retired a second time in 2003. Among many honors and awards he received, he was most proud of being the recipient of the first Outstanding EEO Award, U.S. Department of Commerce, 1987, and Senior Worker of the Year for the State of Georgia,m 2001. Mr. Maney volunteered as a motivational speaker at Augusta Technical School and various civic groups and schools throughout the CSRA.
He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, Iowa State Alumni Association, Forest Hills Golf Club, Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, American Legion Post 248, Kent Island, Maryland, Patrick Walsh Council, Knights of Columbus, the Irish-American Heritage Society, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He held Dual Citizenship in the United States of America and the Republic of Ireland.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Fr. Jacek Szuster celebrant. Pallbearers will be Joe Sheehan, Michael Armstrong, Eric Thompson, Roger Davis, Philip Kelly, David Boland, Brian Murphy, Truong Van, Ryan, Sean and Bray Buckley. A rosary service will be Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. and the family will receive friends until 8:00 p.m. at Thomas Poteet and Son.
Family members include his wife, Frances Buckley Maney, daughters: Samantha Wiehl of Malabar, FL., Mary Campbell (John) of Annapolis, MD, and Casey Campana (Todd) of Atlanta, GA. Sons: David S. Maney, Jr. of Malabar, FL, Stephen Hogan Maney of Annapolis, Maryland, and Sean Buckley Maney of Atlanta, GA. Grandchildren: Sky Wiehl, William Bernstein, Timothy and Kaedi Maney, Buckley and Stephen Campana, Sister in Law: Mrs., Sarah Maney, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Maney was predeceased by his by his parents: Lois Rath and Thomas Maney, and his brothers: Rev. Thomas J. Maney, Jr., Quito, Ecuado, and John Desmond Maney, Minneapolis, MN.
