Augusta, GA – David M. “Pete” Smoak, 66, entered into rest on Saturday, August 10, 2013 after an extensive illness. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lt. Col Daniel B. Smoak USAF (retired) and Lillian K. Smoak, both of Augusta.
Mr. Smoak was born in Augusta but spent his childhood traveling throughout the U.S. and Central and South America as a result of his father’s career. In 1968, he also joined the Air Force where he worked in the Military Police K-9 division. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam with his four-legged partner, Skippy, guarding landing strips for our jets and other airborne carriers. After his military service, he obtained a degree in Criminal justice from the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
In 1983, he returned to his “home base” of Augusta to assist his parents in expanding their family business, Smoak’s Bakery & Catering, Inc.
Mr. Smoak is survived by his daughters: Ryanne Smoak; Lisa Folk and husband Shawn; Danielle Westfall and husband Justin; grandchildren: Richard, Patrick, and Alyssa Westfall; aunts: Jean Adkins, Eleanor Guy; and many cousins. He is also survived by his caregiver for the last several years, Regina Watkins.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with his son in law, Justin Westfall, officiating.
