Deborah Ann Stewart

Deborah Chavel Stewart, 71, a cherished wife, mother and grandmother, peacefully entered into rest on Sunday, February 16, 2025. Born on August 23, 1953, to Mary Chavel, Deborah’s life was one of profound love, service, and selflessness.

Deborah was a lifelong resident of Augusta. After graduating from Richmond Academy, she went on to pursue her passion for caring for others, earning a nursing degree from Augusta College at just 19. She began her remarkable 50-year career in health care at Saint Joseph's Hospital where she dedicated 28 years to nursing. Deborah later served as director of nursing at International Paper and continued her calling by assisting others as part of the “Ask a Nurse” program at University Hospital, as well as working part time at Doctors Hospital.

Her commitment to family was unmatched. In 1978, Deborah married her high school sweetheart, Mike Stewart, beginning a partnership filled with love, laughter and respect. Together they raised two sons, Kevin and Nathan, both of whom were the center of her world. Deborah’s unwavering support for her sons was evident in the way she never missed a school event or sports game, always present to encourage and cheer them on. Her ability to remember every birthday, anniversary, and special occasion, always sending a heartfelt card or handwritten letter reflected her deep caring nature to others.

The birth of her grandsons, Macon and Ash, brought her immeasurable joy. As “Mimi”, Deborah was the epitome of love and indulgence, always spoiling them and never able to say no. The two boys brought a special light into her life, and she reveled in every moment with them.

Deborah had a great love for long summer days at the lake, where she would enjoy afternoon boat rides or watch the sun dip below the horizon sitting on the point listening to music. Those moments brought her a sense of peace that confirmed her appreciation for the simple joys in life.

Deborah was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Chavel. She is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, Mike Stewart, her sons, Kevin Stewart and Nathan Stewart (Katie), her beloved grandsons, Macon Stewart, Ash Stewart and her sister-in-law, Carol Hardy (Vince).

In honor of Deborah's wishes, there will be no formal services. Instead, we invite family and friends to raise a glass for the life, legacy of love, kindness, and dedication she leaves behind as we celebrate her journey home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Community Health by mail to P.O. Box 31166, Augusta, GA 30903 or online: https://www.cchsaugusta.org
