Demaris Gay

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Friday, July 12, 2024, Mrs. Harriett Demaris Gay, 87, loving wife of Tyre Gay. 

Demaris was born in Swainsboro, GA, but lived most of her life in Augusta. A majority of her life was spent as a homemaker. She worked many years as a poll worker during the general elections in Richmond County. She loved working in her yard and growing flowers. She also enjoyed fishing with her daughter and husband and then having a picnic with fried chicken and pineapple sandwiches. Demaris was a longtime member of Curtis Baptist Church and always enjoyed attending Sunday School classes. 

 Family members include her daughter: Teresa and husband Len Johnson, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Mary Smith, and siblings, JW, Ernest, and Harry Hammock, Louise McKamey, Ruth Hunter, Jemira Lyerla, Salle Plaspohl, and Imogene Riner. 

 Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one’s choice. 

 The funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at 11:00 A.M. in the chapel of Thomas Poteet & Son with Dr. Mark Sterling officiating. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.
