Augusta, GA – Dennis Harrell Jones (68) went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, April 1, 2021. He was surrounded by many loved ones. Dennis was born May 7, 1952 in Augusta, Georgia. He attended the Academy of Richmond County. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1974. He received his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1978 and completed his general surgery residency at the University of South Carolina. He completed a fellowship in vascular surgery at Georgia Baptist in 1984 and joined his father’s general surgery practice Jones, Engler and Hill & Associates in Augusta in 1984. Dennis was known to pray with all of his patients and he was loved and respected in the medical community. He was a member of Richmond County Medical Society, Medical Association of Georgia, Christian Medical and Dental Society, American College of Surgeons-Fellow, and American Board of Surgery-Diplomat.
Dennis was predeceased by his loving parents Dr. Garland Frank Jones, Jr. and Eloise Harrell Jones and his brother Wayne Bond Jones. He is survived by his wife: Joy Thompson Jones; children: Jennifer Faith Jones, Cameron Frank Jones; grandson: Dylan Alexander Pryor; his siblings: Jan Jones Hitchcock (Phinny), Phillip Frank Jones (Julie), Paul Vernon Jones (Joy); nieces and nephews: Rebecca Hitchcock Mitchell (David), John Christopher Hitchcock (Kelly), Stephen Frank Hitchcock, Jacquelyn Jones Whetzel (Josh), Christopher Bond Jones (Caroline), Leah Jones Copham (Brian), Paul Vernon Jones, Jr.(Christin) and many great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Hope Barrere. His niece Becca provided loving care for him in his last days.
Dennis accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior during his freshman year in medical school and spent his life witnessing to others in his profession, community and family. His legacy will be one of service above self, loving others and loving Christ.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 3, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Mike Hearon and Rev. John Franks officiating. A graveside will follow at Westover Memorial Park.
