Reginald “Denny” Hammond Hinton Jr., age 86, passed from this earth and entered the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on January 9, 2025. Denny loved Jesus first and foremost, and the person he loved next most was his cherished “teenage bride” of over 67 years, Eddie Ruth Cannon Hinton. Denny placed immense value on giving his time, his attention, and his love to his family, being a loving, devoted, and doting husband, father, and PawPaw to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ruth describes him as a “wonderful, romantic, loving, encouraging, protective husband who was a great companion and fun playmate.” Additionally, he was a loving and attentive son, son-in-law, brother and brother-in-law, a loving and fun uncle to multiple nieces and nephews, and a loyal friend. Denny was a man of great faith and integrity. He had a tremendous work ethic along with being very smart and resourceful, giving way to him being able to fix anything. He was known among his family and friends for his quick and great smile, his bear hugs, his slightly mischievous laugh, his great storytelling ability, and for being fun and interesting. He was also very athletic, enjoying many different activities, sports, coaching teams and playing games throughout his life.
Denny was born in Atlanta, Georgia on April 26, 1938, to his parents Ethel Ertzberger Hinton and Reginald Hammond Hinton, Sr. When he was around 4 or 5 years old, he moved to Tignall, Georgia where he was raised by his paternal grandparents “Mama” and “Papa”. Denny made wonderful memories and had lots of interesting adventures in Tignall and Danburg, Georgia with his grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends. He spent his summers in Atlanta with his parents, siblings, and maternal grandparents. Upon graduating high school, he moved to Atlanta to look for a job and begin his adult life. He went on to work in the printing industry for over 30 years. He met his wife, Ruth, in Atlanta in 1956, they married in 1957 and raised their two children together enjoying lots of sports, camping trips, vacations, and family activities through the years. Denny, along with his wife Ruth, have built a legacy of abiding faith and enduring love for their family and future generations.
In addition to his loving and devoted wife Ruth, Denny is survived by his daughter and her husband, Angelia and Robert Carson; his son and his wife, Sidney and Kayla Hinton, Grandchildren: Robert “Bud” and Brandi Carson, Jonathan and Kora Hinton, Holly Hinton, Savannah and Brandon Foster, Jordan and Stephany Hinton, Haley Hinton, Korbin Leonard, Emma Leonard, and Great-Grandchildren: Kylie Guy, Kate Hinton, Brody Carson, Conrad Hinton, Titus Foster, Daisy Ruth Foster, Marigold Hammond Foster, and Lorelei Hinton. Additional survivors include sisters-in-law Minnie Cannon Vermillion and Janice Cannon Burton, brother-in-law Charles Hawkins, along with multiple nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his infant son Reginald Hammond Hinton III, his parents Ethel Ertzberger and Reginald Hammond Hinton Sr., his parents-in-law Orville and Daisy Cannon, his paternal grandparents Roderick and Bell Hinton, his maternal grandparents Early and Viola Ertzberger, sisters Patricia Moser and Sonya Moser, brothers Harold Hinton, Arnold “Butch” Moser, and James Moser, his brothers and sisters-in-law William and Erma Cannon, Robert and Mildred Cannon, Ed and Dreda Cannon, Ed and Evelyn Pass, Calvin and Eula Alford, Jack and Mildred Diggs, Clarence and Pat Cannon, Lloyd and Irene Dawkins, and Bob Vermillion, and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Road, Augusta, Georgia 30907, with burial immediately following at Westover Memorial Park, 2601 Wheeler Road, Augusta, Georgia 30904 with Pastor Rick Statham officiating. The pallbearers will be son-in-law, Robert Carson; grandsons Robert “Bud” Carson, Jonathan Hinton, and Brandon Foster; and nephews Randy Hadley, Andy Hadley, Danny Hadley, and David Hadley. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM prior to the service.
