Diane Maddox Schumacher
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 in Orangeburg, South Carolina, Mrs. Patricia Diane Maddox Schumacher, 65, loving wife of John Napier Schumacher.
In October of 1957, Diane was born in Augusta, Georgia to the late Jack Lamar Maddox and Margaret Lundy Maddox. A graduate of Westside High School and Augusta State University, she was a proud lifelong member of First Baptist Church of Augusta. Some of her most cherished memories were of her years in the church youth group, and her dearest friends for life were her friends in that group. They remember her for her beautiful voice, her sweet smile, and her infectious laugh. She loved singing, especially in the youth musical group Agape, and often told the story of being at the top of the singing Christmas tree. She met the love of her life John in the youth group, and they were married on July 30, 1977 in the first wedding held on the new Walton Way Extension church campus.
Diane supported John in his full-time ministry and loved being a mother to their two children and Grandmommy to their eight grandchildren. Her children cherish the memories of her laughing and singing - singing around the house and in the car as they were growing up, singing in the praise and worship choir at church, and singing to her precious grandbabies. She loved crafts and made Christmas magic for her family. Her cross-stitched gifts, made with love, were cherished by family and friends at Christmas, on birthdays, when new babies were born, and “just because”. She dearly loved her brother and sister, their children and grandchildren, her cousins and other extended Maddox family, and the Schumacher family. She adored all things Gone With the Wind, The Sound of Music, and Camelot, and she loved her dogs and cats, books (especially mysteries), music (especially Neil Diamond), flowers (especially daisies), and the color purple.
An accomplished businesswoman, she served as vice president of a real estate company, managed the business of an independent real estate developer, and owned her own bookkeeping company, serving small business clients. She also loved helping friends complete their income tax returns and was a professional income tax preparer.
Family members, in addition to her husband, include her children: Kristen Schumacher Burgess of Fife Lake, Michigan and Priscilla Schumacher of Seattle, Washington; siblings: David Lewis Maddox (Tricia) of Greenville, South Carolina and Jean Maddox Ballenger of Augusta, Georgia; grandchildren: Cassidy, Asher, Brennan, Galen, Honor, Corwin, Sadie, and Phoenix Burgess; and many extended family members, whom she loved dearly.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, July 13, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Storey Chapel at First Baptist Church of Augusta with Dr. Rodger Murchison officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, beginning at 1:00 p.m., at the church.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to Patti’s Playground, First Baptist Church of Augusta, discoverfbc.org, or Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center, traversebaycac.org
