Don F. Wanner, Jr.
Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Sunday, July 30, 2017, Donald “Don” F. Wanner, Jr., 93, loving husband of Joan Kettles Wanner.
Mr. Wanner was born in Jamestown, ND on August 8, 1923. He served in the Army Medical Corp. then graduated from Jamestown College with a degree in Chemistry in 1944.
In 1945, he married Doris Michel in 1945 and they had two children, Claudia Shearer of Augusta and Fritz (Donald F. III) of Big Canoe, GA. In 1956, Doris passed away succumbing to cancer. Don and Joan Marie Kettles were married in 1957 (Joan was Claudia’s first grade teacher) and they had a daughter, Megan, who resides in Newark, DE. He has four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Mr. Wanner was an active member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, chairing all the church administrative committees at some time during his membership, serving as lay leader, singing in the choir, and being facilities handyman for many years. He started working for DuPont in 1944 in East Chicago, IN and came to Augusta from Richmond, VA in 1961 to start up and manage the DuPont plant on Marvin Griffin Rd. He retired as DuPont Consultant Manager in the Engineering Dept. in Wilmington, DE and moved back to Augusta in 1985 where he started up Omega Inc., his own engineering consulting company.
He was always active in the community; he was a 32 degree Mason and past member of the Lion’s, Rotary and Exchange Clubs. He helped start up the Augusta Junior Achievement Program and has served as budget chairman for the Augusta United Way and safety chairman for the Red Cross. Mr. Wanner was an active member of the CAURE Committee at the Medical College of Georgia. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
Mr. Wanner is preceded in death by his parents of Jamestown, ND, daughter, Claudia Shearer of Augusta, GA, two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Vogel of Seattle, WA and Mrs. Olive Ann Rogers of Valley City, ND, and by one brother, Kennedy Wanner of Hamilton, MT.
Survivors, in addition to his beloved wife, include his children: Fritz Wanner of Big Canoe, GA, and Megan Gwinn of Newark, DE; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mark United Methodist Church with Rev. James Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Friday Morning Prayer Group.
