Evans, GA – Entered into rest on Friday, August 19, 2022, Donna Lee Garvey, 81.
Donna Lee Garvey was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan to George and Juanita White Cole. She married the Reverend Lawrence A. Garvey in 1963 and they resided in Brooklyn, New York until 1977 when they moved to Indiana. They lived in Summerville until retiring to South Carolina in 2003.
Mrs. Garvey, a graduate of Richland High School in Richland, Michigan received her R.N. from the Bronson Hospital School of Nursing in Kalamazoo in 1962, and her bachelors’ degree in nursing from Marion College in 1987. She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau national nursing honor society, and both the Indiana and the National Association of Healthcare Quality. In 2002 she retired from the Northern Indiana Healthcare System of the Veterans Administration where she served as the Manager of Performance Improvement.
She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, Evans, Georgia where she served on the Prayer Team. She had been a founding member of the Cornerstone Community Church of Alexandria, Indiana where she served as church pianist for over 20 years. She also taught Sunday School, sang with the Cornerstone Singers, played piano for the church’s nursing home ministry, and led music at various Vacation Bible Schools.
Mrs. Garvey was an accomplished painter, having studied at the University of Michigan, the New School for Social Research in Manhattan, and the Art Students League of New York City where she served a member of the Board for many years. While at the Art Students League she was a protégé of Vaclav Vytlacil one of the pioneers of Abstract Expressionism. She had one-woman shows at the Sixth Estate Gallery in New York City, Indiana University East and Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana and the Dunlap Gallery in Augusta, Georgia.
Her parents and husband preceded Mrs. Garvey in death. She is survived by three daughters: Rosemarie (Paul) Handy of Monroe, Georgia; Caitlin Garvey (Jeff Dunkelberger) of Alexandria, Virginia; and Morgan (Ricky) Rhodes of Jackson, South Carolina; four grandchildren: Timothy A. Handy, Kaitlin R. Rhodes, Lucas A. Garvey and Liam R. Garvey and great grandchild: Hannah I. Handy.
