Doris Peterson

Augusta, GA – Entered into rest Friday, May 30, 2014, Mrs. Doris “Dottie” McElveen Peterson, 88, loving wife of 42 years to the late W.M. “Will” Peterson, Jr.

Dottie was a lifelong resident of Augusta. She was one of 8 children of the late Joseph Jackson and Cora Sharpton McElveen. She attended John Milledge Elementary School and The Tubman School for Girls. As a young adult, she worked at Cullum’s, A. Brian Merry Lumber, and The Bon Air Hotel. After the birth of her children, Dottie became a fulltime homemaker and volunteer. She was a member of Central Christian Church. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and was a very special “mother” to many others.

She never met a stranger and will be lovingly remembered for her big hugs, jovial spirit, sense of humor, special love for game shows, and mastery of Scrabble, which she played almost daily for years.

Dottie is survived by daughters, Kim Sams (Bill), Pam DeNeve (Bob); stepdaughter, Linda Peterson Hamilton; grandchildren, Elizabeth-Ann “Missy” Sams, Rob Nelson (Marcy), and Kimberly DeNeve; brother, The Rev. Marion McElveen (Ruth); and many nieces, nephews, and special friends. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Helen Wood (Bud), Elmer Burnley (Frank), Jackie Adcox (Dunc), Margaret McElveen, and Jewell McElveen; brother, George McElveen; and stepson, W. Martin Peterson, IV.

A special thank you to Dottie’s hospice nurse, Amy Stewart, and devoted caregivers, Gail Shinholster, Crystal Bowers, and Amanda Korfel.

A graveside service and celebration of her life will be held Monday, June 2, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. in Westover Memorial Park with Dr. Greg Porterfield officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Wood, Bill Burnley, Kent Adcox, Bill Sams, Dr. Jim Wilkes, and Jason Valdes. Honorary pallbearers will be Alvin Strickland and Russell Hensley.
