Dorothy (Dot) Fowler Thompson
Augusta, GA-Dorothy (Dot) Fowler Thompson, wife of the late John (Jack) Thompson, died March 22 in Augusta at the age of 88. Born in Milledgeville to Charlie and Bess Fowler, she grew up among five siblings and six half-siblings. She graduated Georgia College and State University (then Georgia State College for Women - GSCW) and moved to Augusta to teach elementary school. At First Baptist Church she met Jack, the love of her life, and they married in 1962. Dot taught with Augusta Public Schools for 30 years (1952-82), most of them at Montesano and Lake Forest Elementary. Jack and Dot were devoted and immensely popular Sunday School teachers to two generations of 5-year-olds. Their financial contributions to First Baptist Church are legendary.
Friends relished Dot's sparkling, often wry, sense of humor. She raised irises and doted on Himalayan and Persian cats, most recently her beloved Chad, until her death. She is survived by sisters Jewell Moore of College Park, GA and Janet Horne of Jacksonville, FL, nieces Jan Moore (Denver, CO) and Deane Anne Johnson (College Park, GA), nephew Antley Fowler (Jacksonville, FL), and Charles (Chuck) Culpepper (Augusta), her dear friend of 39 years and caretaker since Jack's death.
A celebration of Dot's life will take place Thursday, March 29, at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of First Baptist Church Augusta, Dr. C. Gregory Deloach officiating. Pallbearers include Charles Culpepper, David E. Hudson, William O. Key, Jr., Gary Swint, Frank McPhail, and Bobby Turner. Members of Dot's Sunday School class, Thankful Bible Class, will serve as honorary pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions in Dot's honor to the First Baptist Building Fund, 3500 Walton Way, Augusta 30909.
