Dorothy Hackett Schneider

Augusta, Ga. Dorothy Hackett Schneider was born in New Bedford, MA, on August 28th, 1926, to Owen F. Hackett and Margaret Meehan Hackett. She graduated from New Bedford High School on June 21st, 1945. Upon graduation she entered Nursing School at Union Hospital in Fall River, MA, completing the program in 1950. Soon after she joined the US Army on May 22nd, 1950, as a 2nd Lt. and completed basic training in August of 1950 at the Medical Field Service School at Fort Sam Houston, TX, then was assigned to Valley Forge, PA. where she was a staff nurse. She was transferred to Camp Carson, CO. and served as 2nd Lt. at the post hospital. It was there she met her future husband 1st Lt. Howard E. Schneider who was recovering from wounds received during the Korean conflict. Howard pursued her during the year of his hospital convalescence, and they were soon married at Chapel #4; Camp Carson, CO, on July 19th, 1952.

With plans to start a family and not wanting to be assigned to different military posts, Dorothy resigned her commission from the Army on December 24th, 1952. Soon after, she gave birth to Matthew, who was born at Fort Campbell, KY, followed by Paula at Fort Benning, GA and Katharina in Landstuhl, West Germany.

She eagerly embraced the life of an Army wife all the while volunteering at the Red Cross, thrift shops and supporting the career of Howard and raising three children at various Army posts in the States as well assignments in Germany. She never complained about raising her family despite the frequent relocations and the many separations that Howard served in Japan, Korea and Vietnam.

Upon Howard’s retirement from the Army on June 30th, 1978, they retired and put down roots in Augusta, GA, having been familiar with the area due to Howard’s prior assignment at Fort Gordon many years earlier. During those years in Augusta, she was a frequent volunteer at Fort Gordon as well as serving as a Eucharistic Minister at the Chapel on post. For ten years she cared for her Father in their home before his passing at 100 years of age. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining, sewing, traveling the world and following the trends and styles of the fashion world.

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Howard; a son, Matthew and daughter-in-law, Pamela of Winter Garden, FL., two daughters, Paula Andersen and the late Kevin Andersen of Elkhorn, NE and Katharina Dewald and son-in-law, Jon, of Kenly, NC. She leaves behind six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. In addition, she is survived by her three brothers, Owen “Francis” Hackett Jr. and Leonard Hackett both of South Dartmouth, MA and Paul Hackett of Providence, RI.
