Doug Brown

Douglas Gordon Brown joined his dad, sister and grandparents in their heavenly home on May 17, 2024. He is the son of Carlene Murphy and Carter Brown. Doug was born in Memphis, TN on July 29, 1964. He and his parents moved to Augusta, his mother’s hometown, in 1972.

Doug attended Warren Road, A. Brian Merry and William Robinson Elementary Schools, Tutt Middle School and Richmond Academy. Did he like school? A big NO. When he was only in the second grade, he left home for school, hid behind a tree and when his mother left for work, he went back inside and watched TV. Due to having several absences, his principal called his mother and asked about Doug, to which she quickly replied that he was at school. This is just one example of his ingenious strategies for playing ‘hooky’ numerous times for the remainder of his school years. Once school was behind him, he went to work for the City of Augusta. First, he worked in the Utilities department then as a Deputy sheriff at the Charles Webster Detention Center, totaling 25 years as a county employee.

Doug’s passion was watching wrestling on TV and Mustangs. You can bet if there was a wrestling match on TV, he would be watching it. His sister constantly teased him about believing every hit and bounce was real. He loved going to races in Jackson, SC. Most of his friends worked on cars, like Dean and Mike at Bodie’s. He owned four Mustangs over a period of time and was planning to get his new old one on the track soon. He was an Ole Miss fan supporting the team on which his dad had played. Also, Tennessee was his favorite to beat Georgia, which rarely happened.

Doug met the love of his life Elizabeth A Gilmer in December of 2001. They were together for many years, just recently getting married in July of 2023. These two were truly meant for each other and a true example of unconditional love. Over the years they rescued 5 dogs that became their four legged children. One of them being Bailey “BooBoo” was always by Doug’s side and definitely his favorite.

Family members, in addition to his loving wife Elizabeth A Gilmer-Brown, include his son: Joshua Brown; mother: Carlene Murphy; nieces: Sarah Wilson and Allison Hutto; great nieces and nephews: Chloe, Joseph, and Nolan; sister-in-law: Rebecca Franklin-Blume (Benjamin) and their children: Olivia, Broxton and Spencer Franklin; and brother-in-law: Vince Gilmer (Kristan) and their children: Kayla Stanford (Jared) and her son, Wesley, and Kaitlyn Martin (Allen), and Jackson Gilmer. He is preceded in death by his father, Coach Brown, stepfather, Joseph Murphy, and sister, Laura Wilson.
