Dr. Alexander Henry MacDonell III

Dr. Alexander Henry MacDonell III, 65, of Augusta, Georgia, entered the arms of his loving Savior on Sunday, April 13, 2025, surrounded by his devoted wife and children.

Born on February 16, 1960, in Atlanta, Georgia, Alex was predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Julia MacDonell. He is survived by his beloved wife of many years, Judith (Judy) Thompson MacDonell; his three children: Dr. Alexander Henry MacDonell IV (wife Dr. Charlotte MacDonell), Kathryn MacDonell Akin (husband Dr. Stephen Akin), and Dr. Robert Thompson MacDonell; his cherished grandchildren: Alexander Henry MacDonell V, Wallace Thompson MacDonell, William Alderman MacDonell, Molly Grace Akin, Madeline Joy Akin, and Samuel Thomas Akin; his brother, Allen LaGarde MacDonell (Sarah); and his sister-in-law Lisa Cooper (Chris). He is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews.

Alex graduated summa cum laude from the University of Georgia in 1982 and earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in 1986. He went on to complete a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Tennessee, followed by a fellowship in Cardiology at the University of Kentucky. For over 30 years, he practiced interventional cardiology in Augusta, always devoted to delivering his patients the highest standard of care. His approach to medicine was deeply rooted in his faith, as he sought to show the love of Christ through compassion, dedication, and service.

A lifelong follower of Christ, Alex was a devoted member of First Presbyterian Church, where he met his wife Judy during his medical school years. He raised his children in the church and served faithfully as an usher, then a deacon, and finally an Elder. He also served on the leadership team of his beloved Sunday school class. Caring for others brought him true joy, and he considered it the utmost honor to support his church family in any way he could.

To his family and friends, Alex was a pillar of strength, kindness, humility, and love. His greatest joy was spending time with those he loved. His legacy of unwavering kindness, humble service, and deep faith is evident to all who knew him. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, a steadfast friend, a dedicated physician, and, most importantly, a faithful servant of the Lord. Colossians 3:12 states, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Alex truly exemplified these characteristics in every aspect of how he lived his life. He will be so deeply missed.

A visitation will be held at First Presbyterian Church in the Commons Area on Saturday, April 19, from 12:00–12:45 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 1:00 p.m. in the sanctuary. Friends and loved ones are also invited to a drop-in visitation at the MacDonell residence from 3:00–5:00 p.m. that afternoon.

If desired, donations may be made to either First Presbyterian Church of Augusta (615 Telfair Street, Augusta, GA 30901) or Piedmont Augusta Foundation, (P.O. Box 3912 Augusta, GA 30914).
