Augusta, GA – Carleton Harold Baker Ph.D., 86, passed away on January 28, 2017 in North Augusta, SC. He was born in Utica, New York to Harold and Loretta Darling Baker.
Carl grew up in Oriskany, New York. He graduated from Oriskany Central School in Oriskany, NY in 1948. After high school he attended Syracuse University (Utica College) where he received a degree in Biology in 1952. He then completed a M.A. in Biology in 1954 and a Ph.D. in Biology (Physiology) in 1955 from Princeton University.
He married his beloved wife of 53 years, Sara Johnson, in 1963 in Augusta, GA. Carl was a member of St. Augustine Episcopal Church. He enjoyed playing golf, reading and music.
Carl was an assistant, associate, and professor of Physiology at the Medical College of Georgia from 1955-1967, professor of Physiology and Biophysics at the University of Louisville from 1967-71, professor of Physiology and Biophysics, research scientist, Deputy Dean, Chairman of Physiology and Biophysics, and professor of Surgery at the University of South Florida College of Medicine, starting in 1971. He was a visiting professor and clinical research professor of Physiology at University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
His primary field of interest was cardiovascular physiology. He investigated adrenal gland influence in problems relating to the mechanisms regulating the transfer of fluids in and out of circulation. He was interested in blood volume, its size, and regulation. He evaluated techniques for determining it and how it varies under experimental conditions. He also studied microcirculatory functions.
Carl achieved Professor Emeritus at the University of South Florida, University of South Florida Distinguished Scientist Award 1981, Deans Citation 1991, and Founder Award 1992. He was awarded numerous research grants through the National Institutes of Health, Burroughs Wellcome and Co. Inc., University of South Florida, The Florida Heart Association, The American Heart Association, and Syntex Pharmaceuticals.
He was a fellow and Section Chair of The American Physiological Society. Carl was a Charter member, committee member, and Symposium Chair of The Shock Society. He was a member of American Heart Association, Sigma XI, Microcirculatory Society, Florida Heart Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, International Society of Bioheology, Association of Chairmen of Departments of Physiology, and the European Society for Microcirculation.
Carl edited a book, Microcirculatory Technology and was the author of more than 200 research papers, abstracts and presentations and a member of numerous University committees. He was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Florida Heart Association 1972-1973, and the Hillsborough County Heart Association 1971-1978.
He was on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Physiology 1966-1972, Journal of Applied Physiology 1966-1972, Blood Vessels 1973-1984, Circulatory Shock 1978-1994, Microcirculation, Endothelium and Lymphatics 1983-1987.
His honors include Charter Faculty member of the University of South Florida College of Medicine 1971, Service Awards from the Florida Heart Association 1974 and 1977 and the Outstanding Artist/Scholar Award from the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.
He is survived by his wife Sara; daughters: Beth (Lee) Bradshaw, Janet (Scott) Baker Howell and cousin and God son David Rauscher (Lynn) of Sequoit, NY. He is preceded in death by his parents Harold and Loretta Baker, and brother Ronald Baker.
The funeral service will be Thursday, February 2, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church with Rev. James T. Said officiating. Burial will follow in Westover Memorial Park.
