Dr. George Hemperley Brownell, Ph.D
Augusta, GA- Dr. George Hemperley Brownell passed away on May 5, 2012.
Born October 23, 1938 to William and Margaret Brownell in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Dr. Brownell earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth and went on to obtain his Ph.D. at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.
He married his beloved wife Julie Ann Poe in Minneapolis, MN on September 2, 1967. That same year George and Julie moved to Augusta, Georgia with Julie's son Brian Scott Ryken. Dr. Brownell joined the faculty at the Medical College of Georgia as a Bacterial Geneticist in the Microbiology Department. He was a mentor and major advisor to several graduate students. Dr. Brownell retired from the medical college in 2000.
In addition to son Brian, George and Julie had a daughter, Tara Marie.
George had a love for fishing and hunting and over the years made several trips to Canada, South Dakota and New Mexico. The family also enjoyed vacations to Hilton Head Island and various horse ranches throughout the west.
Dr. Brownell was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Julie.
He is survived by his daughter: Tara Marie Brownell; stepson: Brian Scott Ryken (Zenobia); grandchildren: Devin, Maggie, Erin and Jack; brother: Tom (Cindy), nieces and nephews, loving neighbors and friends and his beloved dog Beau.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting that charitable donations be sent to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church 3703 Old Petersburg Road, Martinez, Georgia or a charity of the donors’ choice.
A memorial service will be held on June 15, 2012 at 11:00am at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, with Pastor Steve Olson officiating. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
