Augusta, GA – Entered into rest January 18, 2011, Dr. Gilbert Lacy Klemann, 98.

Dr. Klemann was born in New Rochelle, NY. He graduated from Williams College in Massachusetts and Cornell Medical School in New York. After completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, Dr. Klemann served in the Army Air Corps and was sent to Daniel Field as a flight surgeon. In 1943, he was shipped overseas, and entered France shortly after D-Day. He returned to Augusta in 1946, and deciding that the North was too cold for him, opened a private practice of medicine. He retired in 1998 after 52 active years.

Dr. Klemann was an avid sailor, and a founding member of the Augusta Sailing Club. He raced competitively until a few years before his death.

He was a founding member of St. Albans Episcopal Church and also of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church.

An excellent musician, he played piano, bass violin, and the accordion; helping to pay his way through medical school. In Augusta, he played in the medical band Code 99.

Family members include his children: Gilbert S. Klemann, MD and wife Elizabeth Perkins Klemann, John J. Klemann, Nancy Klemann Sproul and husband Gordon Sproul; grandchildren: Gwendolyn L. Klemann, Katherine E. Medcalfe and husband Simon K. Medcalfe, Gilbert P. Klemann MD and wife Jennifer P. Klemann, Elise Sproul Annis and husband Justin Annis, Karen Sproul, Lacy Sproul; and 3 great-grandchildren.

A Graveside service will be held Thursday, January 20, 2011 at 11:00 AM, at Westover Memorial Park with Rev. Joe Bowden officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the grave. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Augusta Sailing Club and Code 99.
