Augusta, GA – Dr. James Nicholas Powell passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 31, 2023. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Betty Mayton Powell, as well as daughters Kathryn Powell Vincent (Scott) of Nashville, TN and Lauren Powell Land (Adam) of Augusta, GA and Kristen Marie Powell. He is also survived by four grandchildren: John Powell Vincent, Franklin Samuel Land, Anne Nicholas Mayton Land and Chloe Powell. His sister, Casandra Nicholas Powell of Marietta, GA survives him also, with a niece and a nephew.

Nick was born on September 16, 1941, in Chicago, IL to the late Carmon and Ellen Nicholas Powell. Nick graduated from the University of Tennessee-Martin in 1961, then received his DDS degree from University of Tennessee-Memphis in 1965. Following three years as a member of the US Navy Dental Corps, he entered University of Nebraska to obtain his Master of Science in Periodontics. Nick joined the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry faculty in 1971. In 1974, he opened a private practice in Periodontics in Augusta, GA where he practiced for 30 years until his retirement in 2004. He then returned to MCG as a faculty member of the Periodontics Department, retiring again in 2012.

Through the years, Nick enjoyed membership in numerous dental organizations, including Augusta Dental Society, Georgia Dental Association where he was named an Honorable Fellow, American Dental Association and the American Academy of Periodontology. He also was awarded membership into Pierre Fouchard Academy, Fellow of American College of Dentist and International College of Dentists. Nick's professional experience allowed him to co-author Clinical Dentistry – Periodontal Instrumentation.

Nick was also a member of Exchange Club of Augusta, Symphony League of Augusta, Augusta Country Club and Church of the Good Shepherd.

Nick will be remembered for his love of his patients and his fellowship with family and friends. Good old-school country music was a passion and he often traveled distances to hear an artist perform. He enjoyed fine wines, from the search to the last drop, as well as the search for fine food and fine furniture. His skills as a dentist found him restoring antique furniture, especially antique tea boxes that became treasured possessions of friends and family.

Funeral services will be held Monday, November 6, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. at Church of the Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton, Way, Augusta, GA 30904. officiants will be The Reverend Bunny Simon Williams and The Reverend Talmadge A. Bowden. Burial will be private. The family will receive visitors on Sunday, November 5, 2023 from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. At Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Road, Augusta, GA 30907. Pallbearers will be Mr. Michael R. Mayton, Mr. Robert M. McRae, Dr. Logan Nalley, Dr. Ronald T. Peacock, Dr. Stacy H. Story and Dr. T. Barrett Trotter. Honorary pallbearers will be The Exchange Club of Augusta.
